Ulun Danu Temple Like a Small Island When High Tide

Name of “Ulun Danu Beratan” relates to its location. In Balinese Language, Word of “Ulun” means “on the side” and “Danu Beratan” means name of the lake. So, the temple was named “Ulun Danu Beratan Temple”.

Ulun Danu Beratan is called the most iconic temple because its location is unique and strategic, on the side of Beratan Lake. The temple seems like floating as a small island in the middle of the lake when high tide.

In addition, its area is also surrounded by backdrops of green hills that highly add into beautiful landscape. The visitors often make use of beauty of the temple for a photography background, particularly by the couples who take pre-wedding photo.

History of Ulun Danu Beratan Temple

In Chronicle of Mengwi, the establishment of Ulun Danu Beratan Temple was built by I Gusti Agung Putu (King of Mengwi Kingdom) in 1556 Caka (1634 AD).

The temple is dedicated to manifestation of Ida Sang Hyang Widhi (the God) as for supplication for the fertility of agricultural land, the prosperity, the welfare and natural preservation to avoid disasters.

As others temples in Bali, Ulun Danu Beratan has also own anniversary day (known as “Pujawali Day”) which is commemorated every 6 months (210 days) in Caka Calender, exactly on Anggara Kliwon Julungwangi (15 days before Galungan Day).

During the Pujawali Day, the local community attach holy traditional attributes to all holy building and hold Hindus some religious rituals, and many Hindus Peoples in Bali will visit to worship.

  1. Penataran Agung Temple

Penataran Agung Temple can be seen when entering a main gateway to Beratan, where it is dedicated to manifestation of the God as Tri Purusha (Parama Siwa, Sadha Siwa, and Siwatman).

  1. Dalem Purwa Temple

Dalem Purwa Temple is located on the south side of Beratan Lake and there are 3 holy buildings in it, namely a main shrine (dedicated to Bhatari Durga dan Dewa Ludra), Bale Murda Manik (BaleParuman) as a place for meeting by local, and Bale Panjang as a place to put traditional offerings.

Taman Beiji Temple is a holy building without wall surround, as a place for Ngebejiang (purify the means of the ceremony), asking for Tirta (holy water), and Melasti Ceremony by Local Community on a certain holy day.

  1. Lingga Petak Temple

Lingga Petak Temple is the most popular in Ulun Danu Beratan, consist of three area levels with a sacred well and a white lingga flanked between black stone and red. There are also two main shrines in it, one with 11 roof-levels (Meru Tumpang Solas) and another with 3 roof-levels (Meru Tumpang Telu).

Prajapati Temple is dedicated to Durga Goddess and can be seen when entering area of Beratan Lake. Main characteristic of the temple is existence of a big banyan tree.

Besides five temples above, there is also a Buddha Stupa in the complex of Ulun Danu Beratan. The stupa faced to south and indicated the existence of the meaning of religious harmony in earlier times.

The best time to visit is before 10.00 am because the temple is still quiet of visitors and fog is rarely seen in the morning, so you have the flexibility in taking photos and the temple view isn’t also deterred by fogs.
